All Custom GPT's Are Being Retired By OpenAI On 12.11.26

Open AI is retiring all customGPT’s on December 11th, 2026. I know many of you use customGPT’s in many parts of your business and I’m writing this post to alert you that OpenAI is retiring ALL customGPT’s, across all plans, on December 11, 2026.

Why are they doing this?

According to OpenAI’s Overview:

”We're planning to retire custom GPTs and help creators migrate them to plugins. Plugins can bring reusable instructions, reference files, and connected apps together, so your guidance can work alongside the tools and information a task needs.

If you created a GPT, prepare to migrate and test it when migration is available for your account. If you use someone else's GPT, check its notice and the creator's guidance about a replacement.

The transition affects all ChatGPT plans. Migration and plugin access may differ by account or workspace. Follow your in-product notice for the options available to you.

What happens to the original GPT after migration?

The original GPT remains usable until retirement, but becomes read-only after migration and its creator cannot delete it. Make future changes to the plugin.

At the applicable retirement date, custom GPTs and their GPT pages become inaccessible. Migrate and test the replacement before the retirement date in your notice.

For those who created custom GPT’s and sold them to others or who share their custom GPT’s:

Migration doesn't carry over your GPT's sharing settings or give its existing users access to the replacement. A migrated personal plugin starts private. Making it public requires a separate plugin submission process.

Before asking people to switch, confirm that they can access and use the replacement.

What about customGPT’s that I use from a creator?

Check the notice on the GPT and any guidance from its creator about a replacement. You do not need to migrate a GPT you only use, and permission to use it does not let you migrate it yourself.

Access to the original GPT does not automatically give you access to a replacement plugin. Check whether a replacement is available to you before switching.

Like many of you might be, I am very annoyed at this change as I use custom GPT’s in my own workflow, but in the rapidly shifting world of AI, and what it makes possible, change is inevitable so we have to roll with it. Please don’t shoot the messenger.

It’s better to know now than to be caught by surprise in December, right?

I’m currently researching service providers who could help you with this migration, and will update this post when I have more information.
